THE SHORT STORY

Explore how to design a mechanism to achieve a given aural or visual effect in this seminar looking at the physics, modeling, and fabrication techniques behind mechanical and kinetic sculpture. Participants will design and build their own sculptures or have the option to join a group effort to create a musical synthesizer driven entirely mechanically.

THE LONG STORY

In this working group we'll be exploring the design and construction of mechanical and kinetic sculptures.

We'll be meeting weekly for a mix of seminar style presentations of some of the tools and techniques behind mechanical sculpture and open, facilitated studio time to design and construct personal projects. Participants designing their own projects are encouraged to open up their projects for collaboration.

If you're not sure how you'd like to start, there will be a seed project available to hop onto. The seed project will be a musical synthesizer which is mechanical rather than electronic and playable by multiple people simultaneously, each of whom will control one aspect of the music (e.g. the melody, tempo, key, etc.).

Participants are encouraged to alter the design or create their own project entirely, as this seminar is intended to be a chance for people of a wide variety of backgrounds and interests to come together to work on and share their projects.

The working group will meet for eight weeks and the studio time will continue as a meetup after the seminar, given appropriate interest. Participants will select and acquire their own materials: scavenging and re-use is encouraged.

Workspace will be limited, so those interested should email Julian early. Include some information about yourself or let Julian know when you can swing by sprout's weekly potluck project nights on Thursday evenings

If you have any questions about the program, feel free to drop Julian a line.

The program will be funded by a suggested donation of $150 up front or $15/session. If you have any questions about possibilities for work trade or other payment options, please contact Alec.
